Software – Cross-Platform

Software? What software!?

NOTE: The fastest way to find information specific to Software stuff here at NoviceNotes is to locate the Pages list on the very front page of the web log (and should also be visible in the sidebar from this page as well). The pages take the form of a Topically Categorized Heirarchy, so it’s best to scan through the entire list to identify which are the ‘Parent’ items, locate the category of your interest, then read from top-to-bottom, the items under that Parent category page (i.e. the indented list items which are subcategories under Software).

These are the eyes of disarray

Believe me, I am well aware of the increasingly jumbled state of content here at NoviceNotes, and I do intend to rebuild it from the ground-up, soon, but I am obliged to focus on other matters, presently.

It’s great that I have a lot of things going on elsewhere right now, however unfortunate that I have less time to devote to NoviceNotes. A major improvement to NoviceNotes is forthcoming, perhaps built upon a Drupal framework (sound good to you?). Right now, I’m making little improvements here and there, such as trying to better categorize the Software section to allow for a Software: Linux, Software: Windows sort of heirarchy, so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for, more quickly. Until then, please just read patiently through the somewhat disorganized state of the existing pages.

Software, software– we all love the Software! For our efforts in Web Design, Web Application Development, and all of the tasks involved in the production, and finally the publication of a full-blown Web Site or Web Application, we need text editors, but some of us prefer the text editor as part of an IDE! We need to handle a lot of images: will we use a simple application (well, indeed– not simple, relative to its own class) like IrfanView, or something more able to turn a bumblebee into a Mack™ Truck, like perhaps Photoshop? Well… let’s see what we can come up with, shall we?

Below you will find links to Novice Notes articles about various Software, including (but not limited to):

  • Operating Systems:
    • Linux (mostly Fedora, Mandriva, and notes for various CLI Bash commands)
    • Windows XP
  • Software Applications:
    • Text Editors (such as EditPlus 2, Notepad++, SciTE, gEdit, Scribes, etc.)
    • Web Design and Web Application Development IDE’s (like Bluefish, Quanta+, Dreamweaver, HomeSite, TSW WebCoder, tsWebEditor, and countless others)
    • Raster Graphic Imaging: with many so-called image viewer applications being capable of a hefty load of editing, built-in, i’ve lumped some Advanced Digital Imaging software, with software which might otherwise be percieved as merely a way of browsing a folder full of images (e.g. XnView, Picasa, IrfanView, etc. often being the ‘editor’ of choice for bulk-renaming or resizing tasks– or even a quick embedded, text-over-image for illustration task, vs Photoshop, Fireworks, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, etc.)
    • Scalable Vector Graphics: SVG (e.g. Inkscape), and other Vector based graphic design tools
    • System Utilities: (e.g. ReName, Bulk Rename Utility, Free Commander filesystem manager, etc.)
  • Software Issues:
    • There are many articles here at Novice Notes™ which focus not so much on any particular software Brand, or even focus on any particular category– but which might instead approach a problem we face. Therein, the article will likely pose possible ways of solving the problem at hand through the use of various techniques, which of course, might then cite some specific software. What the heck– it’s free game in the world of ‘blogging‘, eh? hehe…
      :-)
