(formerly listed as page “the Aspiring Server Admin” )
Web Development and Server Administration, as far as I’m understand, are two areas of study; two disciplines which in terms of required background for success, they are quite dissimilar, I believe they also go hand in hand– especially if the Web Developer wants to truly master the art of Server Side Scripting. I believe it is possible for a Web Developer to excel greatly in his field without a thorough knowledge of Server Administration, however, I also believe that with the added knowledge of Server Administration to guide the Developer in the creation of his Applications, those Applications will most likely benefit from greater efficiency and security.

I feel that it’s necessary not only to research and master Web Development programming, but also Web Server Administration. So going from that philosophy, here I will list my goals in the realm of Server Administration. Due to the greater deficit in knowledge, at this point, it makes more sense for me to merely have this sub-section of the Web Developer Pocket Reference, rather than to dedicate an entire resource to Server Administration.

Topics I need to research in order to overcome some obstacles i’m currently facing, related to Server Administration

  • master installation and administration of Windows 2003 and MS SQL servers
  • e-Mail: Assuming i’ve installed all of the software on the server, what needs to be learned in order to properly administer, for example, the e-mail of any customers who might use space on my hosting server?
  • SSL
  • IMAP vs. POP: in what case, which is preferred and why?
  • What is LDAP?
  • What is ICMP?
